Eco-Tales Story Walks

On 15th of March this year, in Parkplatz Wald near Heusenstamm, Germany, a group of enthusiastic young people gathered for a unique outdoor workshop called Eco-Tales Story Walks, organized by EUaktivisten’s local volunteers. The idea behind this activity was to help youth explore nature in a deeper and more creative way, by walking through the forest while learning how to combine environmental awareness with storytelling. We welcomed 19 participants, many of them from nearby communities, who came ready to connect with nature and with each other.

The workshop started with a gentle walk through the forest, where volunteers guided the group along a planned route, pointing out different plants, trees, and signs of local wildlife. Participants were invited to listen carefully to the sounds of the forest and observe small details they often overlook. Along the trail, we paused at different stations where volunteers introduced short stories, folk tales, or local legends connected to forests and nature. Some of these stories came from Germany, while others were contributed by participants who shared cultural stories from their home countries.

After the walk, we returned to a quiet open space where the creative part of the day began. Participants were asked to reflect on what they had seen, heard, and felt during the walk. Using these experiences, they were encouraged to write their own short eco-tale, a fictional story that teaches a message about caring for the environment. Those who preferred drawing were welcome to create story illustrations or forest-inspired artwork instead. It was amazing to see how many different ideas came out, from magical trees and talking animals to tales about climate change and forest protection.

Later, the group came together to share their stories and drawings. Some read their eco-tales aloud, others presented their art, and everyone received supportive feedback. Even the shyest participants found the courage to express themselves. It became clear that the forest was not only a place for walking, but also for imagination, dialogue, and learning. The activity ended with a group reflection where many shared that they felt more connected to nature, more aware of their role in protecting it, and more inspired to continue creative environmental actions in their own lives.

The workshop was carried out fully by EUaktivisten's local volunteers, who prepared the trail, organized the storytelling activities, and created a welcoming environment. Their work made it possible for this day to be both educational and enjoyable. Participants left with a new appreciation for nature and their own creativity, and many asked when the next event would be.
