On 23rd of February this year, our EUAktivisten proudly hosted “Own Your Story”, a one-day empowerment workshop designed to help young people explore vulnerability, self-expression, and identity through storytelling, creative writing, and performance.
Rooted in the belief that vulnerability is a source of strength, the workshop created a safe and inclusive space where youth could express themselves freely, build confidence, and connect with others through shared experiences. The event was part of our broader commitment to promoting mental health, social inclusion, and youth empowerment, particularly for marginalized groups such as LGBTQ+ youth, migrants, and introverts.
To create a safe environment for open emotional expression
To use storytelling and art as tools for building self-esteem and resilience
To promote empathy, active listening, and authentic connection
To challenge stigma around mental health and vulnerability
To inspire youth to own their stories and take pride in their identities
The day began with energizing trust-building games and a collective agreement to foster respect, confidentiality, and openness. Participants reflected on the theme of vulnerability and shared their intentions for the workshop.
“It felt powerful just to say out loud: I want to be heard. That was the beginning for me.” – Klara, Participant
Through writing on topics such as “A time I felt invisible” and “Something I wish others knew about me”, youth explored their personal narratives. In breakout labs, they translated those reflections into:
Spoken word poems
Short role-play scenes
Visual collages and art posters
Creative mentors guided participants in expressing their emotions through body language, voice, and imagery, emphasizing that all forms of storytelling are valid.
The day closed with a reflection circle where each participant shared one word that captured their experience (e.g., liberated, seen, connected). Everyone received a certificate of participation and a booklet with journaling prompts to continue their journey of self-expression.
22 youth participated
95% said they felt emotionally safe and supported during the workshop
90% reported increased confidence in sharing their story publicly
3 follow-up storytelling groups are now forming with peer-led facilitation
Quotes from participants:
“This space reminded me that I’m not alone.”
“I came here with fear. I’m leaving with pride.”
“I want to take this kind of energy into my school.”
