Painting Public Values

A Monthly Visual Art Workshop on Democratic Expression

In today’s fast-moving world of digital messages and filtered feeds, slowing down to reflect and create with our hands is not only refreshing, it’s essential. With this in mind, EU Aktivisten invites young people to explore how visual art can become a medium for civic reflection, dialogue, and expression through our new monthly workshop, Painting Public Values.

This program is part of our Art & Participation Series, designed to bridge the space between personal creativity and shared social responsibility. Through painting, discussion, and collaboration, we’ll explore how values such as solidarity, human rights, equality, and freedom of expression can be interpreted and communicated visually, not through slogans, but through colors, shapes, and stories that come from within.

Each session will begin with a short guided introduction on a relevant theme. One month, the theme might be “Freedom of Expression in Europe.” Another might focus on “Living Together in Diversity,” or “Climate Justice as a Civic Duty.” These themes are carefully selected to align with the priorities of youth policy at the European level, while remaining open enough for personal interpretation.

After a short introduction and discussion, participants will begin working individually or in small groups. No artistic experience is required, this is not a class in technique, but a space for expression. Facilitators will be present to assist with materials and support your process, but the creative direction will always come from you.

By the end of each session, participants will have created one or more original works reflecting the monthly theme. Time will be reserved to share and discuss the works with the group in a supportive, non-evaluative atmosphere. Selected artworks may be featured in community exhibitions, youth festivals, or in partnership projects with our network of NGOs across Europe.

This workshop is ideal for anyone who wants to think critically about the world we live in, while engaging with painting in a purposeful, civic-oriented way. Whether you are already involved in youth activism or looking for new ways to express your values, Painting Public Values is a place where your voice can take visual form.
