As climate change accelerates and environmental crises loom larger, it becomes increasingly important for young people to take the lead in advocating for a sustainable future. The Earth Speaks: When You Listen was a youth exchange project designed to do just that—raise awareness about environmental challenges and inspire concrete action at both individual and collective levels. Held in Ankara, Turkey, this project brought together youth from seven countries.

Project Vision and Goals

The primary goal of The Earth Speaks: When You Listen was to elevate the conversation around the climate crisis and empower young people to take responsibility for shaping a more sustainable world. While the urgency of the climate crisis is often acknowledged, meaningful action remains limited. This project aimed to bridge that gap by fostering a sense of agency among participants.

Participants engaged in discussions and activities designed to:

  • Increase their understanding of environmental issues and the global climate crisis.
  • Encourage sustainable practices and green initiatives in their local communities.
  • Develop leadership skills, enabling them to influence others and advocate for change.

Engaging Activities

The week-long program featured a wide range of activities, combining both theoretical knowledge and practical experiences:

  1. Icebreakers and Team Building: To set the tone for the exchange, participants engaged in icebreaker activities, fostering a sense of community and trust.
  2. Workshops on Sustainability: Experts led workshops on topics such as renewable energy, waste reduction, and sustainable living practices.
  3. Creative Presentations: Participants worked in teams to develop creative presentations, including dramatic performances and multimedia projects, to convey key messages about environmental responsibility.
  4. Video Campaign: A highlight of the project was the creation of a series of short videos addressing different aspects of climate change. These videos were shared widely on social media, amplifying the project’s impact beyond the immediate participants.
  5. Outdoor Learning: Leveraging the unique setting of the Hara Ankara Equestrian and Sports Club, participants engaged in outdoor activities, including horse riding and nature walks, emphasizing the connection between humans and the natural world.

Outcomes and Follow-Up

The immediate outcome of The Earth Speaks: When You Listen was a cohort of informed and motivated young leaders, ready to take action in their communities. Following the exchange, participants were encouraged to implement local initiatives, such as organizing clean-up drives, advocating for policy changes, and promoting eco-friendly practices.

Each partner organization committed to supporting these efforts through ongoing mentorship and by providing platforms for visibility. The project results, including the videos and a booklet of lessons learned, were shared across various networks, ensuring a broad dissemination of the key messages.

A Call to Action

The Earth Speaks: When You Listen emphasized that addressing the climate crisis requires collective effort. Every small action matters, and by working together, we can create a ripple effect that leads to significant change. The project underscored the importance of youth involvement in this critical issue, reminding us that the future belongs to those who are willing to listen to the Earth and act accordingly.

By empowering young people to become environmental advocates, The Earth Speaks: When You Listen planted the seeds of change. As these seeds grow, they will contribute to a greener, more sustainable world for future generations.
